On the occasion of World Cancer Day 2026, Nepal Cancer Relief Society (NCRS) organized a large-scale public awareness rally in Kathmandu. The President of the organization, Mr. Mahesh Shrestha, emphasized that continuous awareness programs of this nature are essential to reduce the growing risk of cancer. He highlighted the need for collective efforts to console cancer patients and boost their morale, acknowledging that each patient has distinct experiences and challenges.
On the same occasion, the General Secretary, Mr. Dipendra Bantawa, stated that the government’s policies and programs related to cancer and cancer patients have remained largely nominal and ineffective, causing continued suffering among cancer patients. He further stressed the need to review and reassess the concessions currently provided by the government to economically disadvantaged and helpless patients suffering from cancer and other chronic diseases.
Recalling that NCRS was the first organization in Nepal to initiate a campaign against cancer, former President Mr. Lokendra Kumar Shrestha suggested intensifying public awareness initiatives across the country.
The rally witnessed the participation of more than four hundred individuals, including students from Durbar High School, Ranipokhari; Bhanubhakta Secondary School, Panipokhari; Shubharambha Secondary School, Chabahil; representatives of Physicians for Social Responsibility comprising students of Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj; Lalitpur Metro Scouts; Kathmandu Lions; Nepal Heart Club; office bearers of the Central Executive Committee of NCRS; members of the Kathmandu Branch; and social workers active in various fields. Participants carried placards and banners conveying informative and awareness-oriented messages related to cancer.
The rally commenced from Bhrikutimandap and proceeded through Sahid Gate, New Road Gate, Jamal, Durbar Marg, and the Old Bus Park, concluding again at Bhrikutimandap.
Similarly, most district branches of the organization marked World Cancer Day nationwide by organizing various cancer-related awareness programs.
Celebrated globally every year on 4 February as a special day to raise awareness against cancer, World Cancer Day 2026 was observed under the theme “United by Unique.”
