Special Workshop on the occasion of World Cancer Day 2021

On the occasion of World Cancer Day 2021, NCRS in collaboration with NDRI organized an Interactive Workshop on the title “Effectiveness of Policy Implementation related to Tobacco Control and Increase of Tax”on 3 February 2021 at Akama Hotel, Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu. There were presence of about 80 participants which included stakeholders of Province 1, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province and Province 6. Along with this, the Former Health Minister of Nepal, Law Officer in Ministry of Health and Population, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Mayor of Gokarneshwor Municipality were also present as the special guest of the event.

In the workshop, Former Health Minister, Honourable Gagan Kumar Thapa was the Chief Guest. Honourable Mekh Lal Shrestha, Member of Parliament of Gandaki Province; Honourable Jivan Bahadur Shahi, Member of Parliament of Province 6; Honourable Nucche Narayan Shrestha, Member of Parliament of Bagmati Province and President of Public Account Committee; Honourable Uttam Kumar Basnet, Member of Parliament of Province 1; Ms. Sarita Gywali Gautam, Law Officer of Ministry of Health and Population; Ms. Hari Prabha Khadki, Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Mr. Santosh Chalise, Mayor of Gokarneshwor Municipality were the special guests of the workshop. Different media representatives were also present in the workshop. The news of workshop was also covered in the online news platforms and was also telecasted in AP1TV News Channal.

In the event, the policy brief of NDRI title "Enforcement of Tobacco Control Policies in Nepal" was also released by Honourable Gagan Kumar Thapa, Ms. Sarita Gywali Gautam, Ms. Hari Prabha Khadki, Mr. Santosh Chalise, Honourable Mekh Lal Shrestha, Honourable Jivan Bahadur Shahi, Honourable Nucche Narayan Shrestha and Honourable Uttam Kumar Basnet.

The Program started with a small presentation about World Cancer Day 2021 and its theme “I AM and I Will” by Dr. Pradip Vaidya, Board Member, NCRS Central followed by a welcome speech by Mr. Mahesh Shrestha, Acting President of NCRS Central. The policy brief title “Enforcement of Tobacco Control Policies in Nepal” was released by Honourable Gagan Kumar Thapa and other special guests of the event. After the release, Mr. Vimal Kumar Hoda, Secretary General of NCRS Central gave a presentation on the contributions of NCRS in tobacco control and increase of tobacco tax followed by a speech and presentation on the "Enforcement of tobacco control policy in Nepal" by Dr. Jaya Kumar Gurung, Executive Director and Ms. Sangita Shakya, TCP Project Manager of NDRI respectively. After the presentation sessions, each special guest gave their opinion about the measures of tobacco control and enforcement of tobacco control policy. The program ended with the speech by our Chief Guest Honourable Gagan Kumar Thapa.

The present politician/stakeholders seemed to be very positive about the tobacco control measures that NCRS and NDRI are taking and gave opinions about certain measures that could to be taken by government and different organizations for tobacco control in Nepal.
