A Press Conference/ Meet was held by NCRS in collaboration with NDRI on 1 February 2021 at Maya Manor Boutique Hotel, Hattisar, Kathmandu. The objectives of the press conference were:
To release the NCRS-NDRI joint paper on “Impacts of tobacco use in Nepal : How the tobacco epidemic is increasing health costs and affecting the lives of tobacco users and their family”
The press conference was chaired and started by Mr. Mahesh Shrestha, Acting President of NCRS by welcoming all the media representatives and informed them about the objectives of Press Conference. The Press Release was also distributed to the media representatives along with different brochures related to different type of cancer and tobacco product awareness. Later, Dr. Jaya Kumar Gurung, Executive Director of NDRI talked about the statistics of tobacco related deaths and its contribution to cancer. After that, the NCRS-NDRI joint paper was released. A short question and answer session was carried out after the release where the media representatives asked questions about the following:
Dr. Jaya Kumar Gurung and Mr. Vimal Kumar Hoda respectively answered all the questions asked by the media representatives. The press conference was ended with the Vote of Thanks by IPP of NCRS Mr. Lokendra Kumar Shrestha. The news of Press Conference and the Press Release, distributed on that day was covered in different online newspaper.
The Press Conference was a success as there were 11 different media representatives including DBIEA. The media representatives were from Health Today, Nepal Samaya, Digital Broadcast Initiative Equal Access, Annapurna Post, Mahila Swasthya, HJFN, Healthpati, Nepal F.M. Network, AP1TV. There ever various news coverage of Press Conference in online news platform and AP1TV also covered the news of our Press Conference and took the interview of Mr. Mahesh Shrestha and Mr. Lokendra Kumar Shrestha which was telecasted in their News Channel. Through this event, the media representatives were informed about the measures that NCRS and NDRI teams are taking and are planning to take to control tobacco use and aware the public about cancer awareness in Nepal, and the statistics related to cancer case in the world and Nepal.
